WEEK 314
"I've never seen it this bad before," Zeb told his grandson. "The entire city is covered with..."

...feathers."

"Grandpa, what happened to all those pigeons?" asked Billy, Zeb's grandson.

"Well, Billy, if I had to take a guess I would say that they got very sick and lost all their feathers and died," said Zeb as he shook his head in disbelief. Zeb lit his pipe and took a few puffs of his favorite Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco. Billy made gagging noises.

"Now, Billy, I'll make allowances for you, since you are only seven years old; but you know that is rude," said Zeb.

Zeb and Billy were climbing up the stairs of the apartment building in hopes that they would find their own pigeons untouched by the epidemic. Finally reaching the roof, Billy covered his eyes. Zeb took his hand and led him to the pigeon coop.

"It's ok now. You can look."

Inside the coop was a brown and white wolf hound.

...rabbits!"

"I don't think they are rabbits, Granpa--they look like it, but they're robots and they've got wings... look, some of them are flying..."

"So they do...so they are. I thought they were taking big hops. My eyesight's not what it was...huh! Rabbits with wings. Whatever next?" Zeb smiled, then frowned.

"They wear badges too, Granpa," Philip said, pointing as one flew past.

"Badges?"

"Yes, they have a name on them..." Philip pointed as one flew close.

"Name? What name?"

"They are part of the 'Hare Force'."

...goose feathers."

"Goose feathers?" Ricky asked.

"Yeah, haven't seen it this bad since the mattress factory explosion in '32."

"Oh, so, the mattress factory has exploded again?"

"Nah, it's the first day of goose season."
