Gerry chuckled, refolding his paper. One, two
Not three seconds passed before Begonia's beller cannoned into the kitchen. "THERE'S NOTHING CAME OUT OF THAT CAKE!"
Huffing indignantly, Begonia emerged from the larder. With rolling pin now clamped tightly under one massive armpit, the cook carried a silver platter laden with a most fantastically decorated cake.
"I saw something come out of the LAKE," Gerry repeated.
"Well, of COURSE you did! But the same rule holds for EVERYBODY around here: you get Begonia's decorated cake on your birthday MORNING. NO exceptions. Not even for that freshwater mermaid!"
by Daphne Rice, Portland, OR"Iffen ya mean, did they drive a truck in here and dump a load of fish into that lake?" Grampa then proceeded to answer his own question, "Yer answer's: yep. Yep, they did."
Gerry waited. He knew Grampa would have more to say.
"Didja see that green truck pull up near the dock last night?" Thinking the old man had changed the subject, Gerry frowned slightly, then nodded.
"What I'm thinkin'," a grin began sneaking across Grampa's face. I'm thinkin' what with stock around these parts takin' such a dive," he gave Gerry a twinkly-eyed wink, "they offered those fish a better deal somewhere's else."
by Ric Hardson, USA"No. Let's go and look -- we can take your rifle in case it is dangerous..."
Sure enough, Gerry and Pat heard the horse before they saw it.
"It's yelling -- sounds like it's real words..."
Before Gerry finished, the huge horse, 25 hands, was standing right beside them.
"You want to know why I'm making such a din?" the horse asked. Without waiting for a reply, he said, "I was told that if I shouted loudly and long enough, I would become a little horse."
by Carolyn Ann Aish, Inglewood, New Zealand"This is the real Nessy. Have I told you kids the story behind this photograph?"
"Only about hundred times, Dad." Junie rolled her eyes playfully at her younger brother. They had been hearing this story ever since they were kids.
"Well, when that one grows up you'll have to remind me to tell her then." Their father said patting her swollen belly.
"I don't think you'll need us to remind you." Frank chuckled.
