Jenica was determined to find out why the gold box with a red ribbon was...

...sitting next to the creche. She slowly lifted the heavy lid and was overwhelmed by the deliciously heavy aroma, then staggered by the sight of bright golden coins which overflowed onto the stable's floor.

"Jenica," Mary said apologetically, "Sorry I didn't have time to put Balthazar's gift away. I've just been so busy..."

...in her best friend Laura's locker.

Jenica was never really of the curious-type, but when she saw that gold box in Laura's locker this morning, she just had to know what it was! Somehow, it intrigued her. Perhaps because it was the most beautiful box she had ever seen, carefully painted with such intricate design, neatly wrapped in a lovely red ribbon. It was lunch and as soon as they were dismissed, Jenica carefully made her way to Laura's locker. To her luck, it was open, and there, sitting on the ledge of Laura's locker, was the box. She slowly stripped the ribbon off and anxiously lifted the lid, and what she saw made her realize how much her curiosity had gotten the better of her, because what she saw when she opened that golden box was the worst thing she had ever set her eyes on.

...moving. She placed her face against the side to listen for a sound. Nothing! She slowly picked it up and looked underneath. She could see a dark spot on the bottom. She put it on the floor. Her mother had warned her not to touch the box, but a little girl of six could not resist. She slowly took the one side of the ribbon and pulled gently. The ribbon slowly undid itself magically. She could not wait to see what was inside! She just saw green flap past her, as the bird took flight. He flew across the room and out of the window, which she had left open. She stood up and watched as her birthday present flew across the street and landed on the neighbor's roof. The tears of disappointment streamed down her face, because all she ever wanted was a pet of her own.

...marked, DON'T open until Saturday 19th January. She searched her brain. Her birthday was in May, and there was no one she knew who had a birthday Saturday. She searched last year's diary, the month of January---nothing. Jenica opened the box. Inside was a new red bandana with white spots on it and a photo of a black cat and a man, both riding on a Sunbeam motorcycle.

"Rastus and Max!" Jenica exclaimed. "I forgot it's the 10th anniversary of their deaths, next Sunday, the 20th! Emily said I'd forget and I asked her to remind me." She opened a card and read, "Keep their memories alive! Together we'll motorcycle up to the spot and remember."

The 'spot' was where their ashes were scattered on Mount Egmont. Such a cat, and such an amazing, generous man -- their memories needed to be kept ALIVE!

...so tastefully coordinated when she knew that the man who wrapped it was totally, completely, colourblind. Also, why said box was laying out in the now, like an abandoned puppy, or a stack of Sunday newspapers on Saturday night. Or like a steak at a vegetarians-only buffet. It was snowing hard outside, which was not an anomaly for the small, secluded town of Pateros, Wa. There was not a soul on the streets, which also was not an anomaly for the town, population 500, proud owner of a bar and a gas station. In fact, Jenica was wondering more about why she was in such a place as Pateros than what could be in the gold box. Since it was too small to hold a car with a full tank of gas and four wheel drive, she wasn't interested.

...leaking enormous amounts of smoke. She grabbed the ribbon and ripped it off the box. She ripped off the top of the lid and out poppped a Dragon! Smoke was pouring out of in nose and mouth. It seemed to be in great distress. Jenica looked it quickly over and assessed the problem. There was a large thorn in it's foot that was causing it great pain. Jenica reached tentively into the box and plucked the thorn from the dragon's foot. It quickly calmed down and curled around Jenica's arm. "Happy Birthday, Jenica!" said Billy.

...floating above the other presents. Tipping her head to one side, Jenica closed her left eye and stared. Nothing. She tried her right eye, blinking rapidly. Nothing. Using all her x-ray vision, she couldn't see anything.

That made sense, she guessed. Nothing could really float by itself, after all.
