"We've got a lot to be thankful for," Tammy told her family. "Starting with our ability to..."
|
...well, you know," she finished. All seven years of her life she'd been warned not to talk about it, and the habit was hard to kick, even now when they were safe. Safe for now, anyway. The men with black suits and guns would be back for them, someday.
They'd found out about the Ability and killed Daddy for it.
Then Tammy and Mommy went into hiding....
Outside in the woods the men in the black truck parked in the trees and loaded the guns. The driver looked over at his partner and said
"Let's make this quick and hit the bar later," Tammy whispered, trancelike.
"What?"
Tammy blinked. "I didn't say anything."
Mommy snuck a look out the window, and saw the car.
"Mommy? What's wrong?"
"They're back."

...lie to ourselves! Am I right dad?"
Instead of an answer, Tammy`s dad just faced the floor. It came much easier that way.
"Am I right dad?"she insisted, raising her tone.
Still, his lips did not release a word.
"Yes, that is fine! Take your feelings and run way! The hell with me, I am not worth your attention!"
Almost yelling, Tammy let the pain deeply rooted in the deepths of her soul, unleash itself:
"You know what? I have had it with you and your behaviour! Your sight makes me sick! I am so out of here!"
Tammy left her parents house, slamming the door hard.
They never heard of her again.

...to over come adversity. Rhonda has successfully recovered from her fifth plastic surgery, without any side effects."
Her cousin Rhonda, a chesty, raven-haired woman with collagen puffed lips, raised her champagne glass in gratitude.
"Uncle Earl," Tammy continued, "has been sober for eight straight months now." Tammy s family clapped, pleased for Uncle Earl. "Aunty Linda, after four marriages, has finally found someone who won't die in a mysterious accident after two years. And lastly, and most importantly, we should be thankful for the Red Sox winning the World Series!"
At this her entire family cheered happily, and Tammy made to sit down when Uncle Earl said, "You forgot to mention your sex change operation. You're all girl now, right?" he scoffed.

...pick our noses. Not every one can do that you know." Tammy said.
"Pick our noses?" Her mom asked confused.
"Why would we want to to that?" Her dad asked.
"The question is why wouldn't we? Think of all the people who don't have arms or fingers."
"So if a person doesn't have arms or fingers they can't pick their nose?" Mom asked and Tammy nodded.
Her mom and dad shared a comical look, for they had just been talking about what would make her stop picking her nose.

...sit down and talk to each other, being a real family and not a bunch of family wannabees who act cordial in front of each other, then stab each other in the back when apart."
Her family all nodded solemnly.
"Especially freaky old Aunt Sophie," Tammy continued. "Who, by the way, couldn't be with us today because of a prior engagement with that man she's been seeing who is of the, um, shall we say, other persuasion. And, have you seen her hair recently? If that's her real color, I'm the next Pope. And her choice in clothes! Leopard-print slacks with a zebra-print top! I mean, come on, who in their right mind would wear..."
