How could this group of rowdy misfits who made their living running illegal liquor amount to anything, much less become part of the most amazing success story in the world? Who were these people who had such an impact on racing? As products of the Great Depression in the late 1920s and early 1930s, they ran illegal moonshine to feed their families. Racing became a by-product of this activity as they tested their cars against each other on the red dirt roads and cow pastures of their day. Many today wonder how racing was born. Red Dirt Tracks captures the essence of these early pioneers as they fought, cussed, rolled around in the mud and blood, and even died to fulfill their desire to race. Red Dirt Tracks is a work of fiction as many of these early drivers are now dead and the memories of those remaining are fading. The events and adventures, however, are the result of the same information from many resources. The names, dates and locations were impossible to pin down. These early drivers had only one goal: to win that race. As Curtis Turner reportedly so eloquently stated, “We couldn’t see nothing but that checkered flag.” |
